Sopot Pier is the most recognisable place in town and the longest wooden pier in Europe – it measures over half a kilometre. A stroll along its boards is a must on any visit to the Bay of Gdańsk. In this guide, we suggest when to come, what to see and how to plan your stay so that the pier is practically just around the corner.
A brief history
The first jetty in Sopot was built in the 19th century, when the town began to develop as a resort. Over the years, the pier was rebuilt and extended many times until it became the symbol of Sopot and one of the most visited places on the Polish coast.
What will you see on Sopot Pier?
- A panorama of the Bay of Gdańsk – in good weather you can see Gdynia, the Orłowo cliffs and the Hel Peninsula.
- The marina – a yacht harbour at the head of the pier.
- Excursion boats – in season, cruises around the bay depart from the pier.
- Sunsets – in the evening, the pier is one of the most beautiful viewpoints in the Tricity.
When is the best time to visit the pier?
In summer the pier is bustling with life, and in season there is an admission fee. If you prefer peace and quiet, come early in the morning or in the evening. Outside the summer season, the pier is much quieter, and winter walks by the sea have a unique atmosphere of their own – read more about this in our article Sopot off-season. We recommend checking current ticket prices and opening hours on the pier operator’s website before your visit.
What is near the pier?
The pier starts at Spa Square (Plac Zdrojowy), right next to the Spa House (Dom Zdrojowy) and the lighthouse. A few steps further on begins Monciak (Monte Cassino Street), with the Crooked House, restaurants and cafés. A cycle path runs along the beach to Gdańsk and towards Gdynia. You will find a full list of attractions in our article What to see in Sopot.
