More and more people choose Christmas by the sea instead of cooking and cleaning at home. Sopot in December means illuminated streets, a winter beach, the proximity of Gdańsk with one of the most beautiful Christmas markets in Europe, and a peace and quiet that is hard to find here in summer. We suggest how to plan Christmas at the resort.
When to come for Christmas in 2026?
In 2026, Christmas Eve falls on a Thursday, and the second day of Christmas (Boxing Day) on a Saturday. The most convenient stay is therefore from 23 or 24 December to 27 December – returning home on Sunday. If you would like to combine Christmas with New Year’s Eve, you can stay by the sea right up until the New Year.
Why spend Christmas in Sopot?
- No preparations and no stress – instead of a marathon of shopping and cooking, you have time for your loved ones.
- The town’s festive atmosphere – in December, the centre of Sopot is decorated with illuminations, and last season the Sopot New Year Village (from 20 December to 6 January) and an ice rink operated on Plac Przyjaciół Sopotu square by the pier.
- The winter sea – a festive walk along the Baltic shore is a ritual that quickly becomes a family tradition.
- Close to Gdańsk – the Gdańsk Christmas Market runs until 23 December 2026, so if you arrive a day or two before Christmas Eve, you will have time to visit it.
The town publishes the current programme of festive events in Sopot on visit.sopot.pl – it is worth checking before you travel.
A festive plan for your stay
23 December – the market and the illuminations
After checking in, take the SKM commuter train to Gdańsk for the last day of the market, and in the evening return for a stroll along the illuminated Monciak (Monte Cassino Street). We explain how to plan a visit to the market in our article The Gdańsk Christmas Market with a Stay in Sopot.
24 December – a peaceful day by the sea
Start with breakfast, then take a long walk on the beach and the pier. Before the evening, warm up in the hotel sauna, which guests use free of charge.
25–26 December – rest and the Tricity
The Christmas days are a good time for strolls along Monciak, the forest trails of the Tricity Landscape Park or some quiet reading in a room with a view. You will find more ideas in our article What to See in Sopot.
Christmas by the sea with children
Children love festive carousels, illuminations and ice skating. Sopot is compact, so most attractions are within a short walk of the hotel. You will find practical tips for families in our article Sopot with Children. Ask reception about an extra bed for a child in your chosen room category.
A Christmas stay as a gift
Looking for a gift for your parents or partner? You can give a festive trip to the sea in the form of an e-voucher. We describe how it works in our article A Hotel Stay Voucher in Sopot.
